The contracts are part of the Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Programme (STEP) by the Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC). The programme is in direct response to aggressive growth set forth in recent years and consists of a 40 kilometer long deep wastewater tunnel with a pumping station at its end and a network of link sewers connecting the existing sewage network and pumping stations to the wastewater tunnel. The new wastewater network will discharge the complete sewage of the city of Abu Dhabi with an approx. population of 1,000,000 people.

As part of the STEP Programme Ed. Zublin AG has received the contract award for Link Sewer Contract LS-01 Package and Link Sewer Contract LS-02 Package.

Contract LS-01 is located at Abu Dhabi Island (CBD) and consists of the construction of 35.7 km Sewerage Network with diameters ranging from 200 mm to 2800 mm and 247 shafts for manholes with a depth between 8 m to 26 m. Contract LS-02 is located on Abu Dhabi Main Land (Residential and Industrial Area) and consists of the construction of 15.4 km sewerage network with diameters ranging from 200 mm to 3100 mm and 95 shafts for manholes with a depth between 8 m to 26 m. Pipe Jacking Method will be implemented for the construction of the sewer tunnels.

In the presence of the ADSSC (Abu Dhabi Sewerage Service Company) Board Chairman H.E. Abdulla Ali Musleh Al Ahbabi and several high ranking management members of ADSSC, the Abu Dhabi Municipality and Abu Dhabi Utility providers, the first TBM for Contract LS-02 was launched on the 29.01.2013.

In total 9 TBMs with diameters from 800 mm to 3100 mm will be used to execute the works. During peak construction time 8 TBMs will be in operation in parallel.
